Local Sport Club: Olympus Freerunning

Hey! My name is Riley, and I’m the creator of Olympus Freerunning.

I started this gym three years ago. I had a dream to be self-employed and love for parkour, so I saw an opportunity to bring something unique and fun to Prince George.

Health is a huge priority for me, however, I never really enjoyed going to the gym. I needed more mental stimulation to stay focused and consistent. I needed a goal larger than just reps with a barbell or I’d lose interest. So, when I found parkour, it worked. It was an epic workout, disguised as playing, and it’s the closest thing to superpowers until science catches up. So, I continue to train!

My hope is to make this sport as big in Prince George as it is around the world and hopefully introduce Prince George’s own version of Ninja Warrior competitions, among other parkour events.

What is Parkour?

Parkour is the discipline of moving your body from point A to point B in the fastest most efficient way possible. It is the activity and culture of practicing to pass/overcome obstacles or structures. Parkour can be a fun activity to get in shape or a discipline to challenge your body and mind. It consists of, but is not limited, to these basic locomotor abilities: running, jumping, climbing, crawling, vaulting, swinging (brachiating), and rolling. Having parkour in your back pocket is great for emergency situations, as well. You never know when you may need to climb over something or drop out of somewhere.

Parkour is an amazing, eye-catching sport that when respected can become a great outlet for people that don’t resonate with competitive or team sports. The sport doesn’t require a competitive nature, more so a desire to push the human body to do incredible things. It really is all about body confidence. It’s about you being able to trust your own two feet to get you where you need to be. It’s believing in your ability to overcome any challenge in front of you. It’s about conquering fears. It is you vs. you. With parkour and ninja training, you’re only competition is yourself. Your only goal is to be able to do more than you were capable of yesterday. And I think that is so powerful.
